Mary McDonnell

Mary McDonnell is a two-time Oscar(r)-nominated actress who is well-known for her portrayals of characters that span both present and past screen roles, as well as the long list of stage and film roles. Mary Eileen McDonnell is a Pennsylvania-born actress. She was the daughter of Eileen (Mundy) who was an American computer consultant from Ireland, and John McDonnell. Growing up in Ithaca, New York, she graduated from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Fredonia. Then, she went to drama school and was admitted to the Long Wharf Theatre Company in East Coast. She was only 22 when she got her first movie role in Dances with Wolves (1990), where she was "Stands with a Fist" Sioux Indian woman who is white. She earned her first Academy Award nomination for the role. McDonnell has been in the Lawrence Kasdan films Grand Canyon (1991), and Mumford (1999) alongside such veteran actors like Robert Redford as well as Sidney Poitier. She also played in Roland Emmerich's Independence Day (1996), with Will Smith. Margin Call (2011) that was against Kevin Spacey, earned McDonnell the Robert Altman award at the 2012 Independent Spirit Awards. McDonnell was the President Laura Roslin in the critically acclaimed series Battlestar Galactica (2004) on Syfy. McDonnell was a star in four seasons. McDonnell was nominated for an Emmy for her regular guest appearance in the television show ER (1994). TNT's acclaimed drama series Major Crimes (2012) stars her as Captain Sharon Raydor. It is McDonnell's first series and she received a nomination for a Primetime Emmy(r). In recognition of her performance as a paraplegic soap-opera actress in John Sayles’s critically acclaimed film Passion Fish (1992), she received a Best Actress Academy Award(r) nomination, nomination, and Golden Globe nomination.
