Watts was born 28 September 1968. After her family moved to Australia and she
made her film debut with the drama For Love Alone (1986) followed by
appearances in three television shows, Hey Dad.. (1990), Brides of Christ
(1991) as well as Home and Away (1991) as well as the feature film Flirting
(1991). After having moved to the United States, Watts initially was a struggle
as an actress performing in small-scale movies until she made her debut in
David Lynch's psychological thriller Mulholland Drive in 2001 as an actress
aspiring to be. Her rise to global fame was triggered by this role. Watts was
then cast as a tortured journalist in The Ring (2002). She was nominated for an
Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of a grieving mother in the
Alejandro film 21 Grams (2003). Her popularity was growing as she starred in I
Heart Huckabees (2004). King Kong (2006), Eastern Promises ((2007)) and The
International (2009). Watts was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Actress
for her role in The Impossible (2012). In the 2010s, she starred in such films
as Birdman (2014) St. Vincent (2014), While We're Young (2015), The Glass
Castle (2017) and Luce (2019). Watts kept her acting career going through
big-budget roles, such as in Divergent (2015-2016).
