Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of Ava DuVernay was on the 24th day of August, 1972, in Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for the arts and her creative side. DuVernay worked as an evening nurse in order to give her aunt the time she needed during her day time to enjoy the pleasures of literature, art and theater. DuVernay quickly fell in love with that 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay learned by example that art could be a vehicle for activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother, with a conscience for social issues, and pushed DuVernay to show her creativity through art. DuVernay was a child living with family members in Compton was a summer resident at Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. Her father recalled the Civil Rights marches that occurred on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the nearby town of Selma, Alabama. The time she spent in Selma Alabama inspired her later to direct a movie about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay obtained her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. She attended University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay began producing television news as an elementary school student. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was able to recall being assigned an assignment to watch the house and examining the garbage from one of the jury. The tasks that she had to perform left her dissatisfied and, following her decision not to continue in journalism, she shifted into the industry of publicity. DuVernay joined a small studio as a Junior Publicist shortly after graduating from college. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999. In addition to PR her agency also created a variety of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
